During the early 1980's, Ray
Klapwyk completed courses of study in piano tuning and technology at
the American School of Piano Technology, Morgan Hill, CA and at
Perkins School of Piano Tuning and Technology, Elyria,
OH. From 1983 to 1990 Ray worked as tuner-technician for
VanGeest House of Pianos in Waterdown, Ontario. He was also much in
demand as a private, independent tuner-technician, tuning and
voicing pianos for music teachers and students, and he established a
reputable business in reconditioning, regulating, and rebuilding
used pianos. In 1985, he obtained status as a Craftsman
Tuner-Technician with the Ontario (Canada) Piano Technicians' Guild.
In 1991 Ray moved his business to Washington State, serving
piano customers part-time while completing graduate studies in
history and cultural anthropology at Washington State University and
continuing his career in educational
administration.
In
August 2002, Ray retired from his position in educational
administration in order to give focused attention to his piano
clientele. He now operates a complete piano service business
from his home and shop 10 miles south of Bellingham, WA, in partnership with his wife Phyllis, who specializes in
refinishing and keytop replacement. Ray's Piano Service is an
almost-full-time activity for Ray and part-time for Phyllis. In
March 2004, Ray successfully completed the requirements to gain
status as a Registered
Piano Technician (RPT) in the
Piano Technicians
Guild. |
