Pianos on Sale

Restored for Resale

4'6" George Steck Grand #184797

Mahogany cabinet. Built in 1966. Restored by Ray's Piano Service in 2004. We accepted this piano as "trade-in" credit towards the sale of a new Hoffman Grand Piano. It was well cared for by a single owner, and the cabinet is in very good condition. We refinished the cabinet, installed new strings and pins, reconditioned the action, and conducted a complete regulation. A sturdy, reliable, and beautiful small grand--ideal for a small music room. Refinished and re-upholstered bench included.

1966 George Steck Grand:
Pictures of the Improvement Process

taken in our shop:

1 – We removed the dampers and the damper action, placing them on a special rack.

2 – We removed the strings and pins, then removed the plate bolts.

3 – We lifted the plate out of the piano using our ceiling-mounted winch.

4 – We scraped the old finish off the bridges and the soundboard, and then stripped the interior of the cabinet.

5 – We stripped and sanded the cabinet and all wood parts.

6 – We painted liquid graphite on the bridges and applied several coats of spar urethane to the Soundboard.

7 – We applied walnut stain to the wood parts.

8 – The soundboard and bridges, refinished.

9 – We applied a new soundboard decal under the final coat of urethane.

10 – After thorough cleaning, sanding, and application of wax & grease remover, we applied a thick coat of black primer to the plate. Before proceeding, we waited one day for the plate to dry.

11 – After sanding the primer and cleaning the surface, we applied a "pale gold" topcoat. This was followed with a coat of clear urethane to add lustre and strength. The plate will be ready to install after two days of drying.

12 – When we lowered the plate back into the piano, we found that the treble bridge and pins made contact with the plate. We removed a portion of the plate to ensure that the soundboard would vibrate freely, and we bolted the plate in place. Then we installed understring felts.

13 – We applied sealer, sanded, and then applied several coats of clear lacquer, on each part of the piano.

14 – Before applying finish to the cabinet, we masked off the plate and strings, and the keybed.

15 – During each step of the refinishing process, we placed the various veneered wood parts on our storage rack for drying.

16 - We reconditioned the action--tightened all screws, reshaped hammers, replaced defective parts. We cleaned the keys.

17 – We cleaned the key frame and installed new underkey punchings.

18 - We regulated key height and levelling, then installed the upper action and conducted a completed regulation of its adustments: hammer blow distance, letoff, dip, key dip.

19 – After bolting the refinished plate in place, we installed new understring felts, strings, pins, and dampers. Then we tuned the piano several times at concert pitch.

20 - We re-installed the sostenuto bar and adjusted it to work on each damper individually.

21 - We re-assembled the lyre, music rest, and lid. Finished! This piano will bring beautiful music to the family room for years to come!

22 – Close-up of music desk.

23 - Close-up of new fallboard decal.

24 – Close-up of pedals.

25 - Rear view.

26 – We installed new upholstery on the bench and refinished it to match the piano.
